From Wendy Sadler: This is a photo of Silas Usher....he was serving with HMS Vanguard when she exploded in 1917, but was on leave, so not a casualty of the ship....During the Battle of Jutland however he was stationed with HMS YARMOUTH.
Bit of a character, he spent time in cells several times over his service and in 1919 deserted the Navy, with Colchester Police recovering him (he was born near the town). He died in 1974.
