Joseph Charles Sheldon shipwright on H.M.S.Cochrane at the Battle of Jutland Joseph was born in Eastleigh on 25th September 1893. Before WW1 he served with the Hants Royal Garrison Artillery and then joined the Navy on 2nd December 1912. He served on H.M.S. Cochrane from July 1914 until she ran aground in 1918 at Liverpool and was scrapped. After WW1 he served on H.M.S. Lowestoft, H.M.S. Centurion and the river gunboat H.M.S. Gnat on the Yangtze River. He left the Navy in December 1934 as a Chief Petty Officer having served 22 years. He died on 5th October 1979 in the Royal Navy Hospital Haslar. His brother Frederick William James Sheldon was also at Jutland and served onboard the ill-fated H.M.S. Warrior, thankfully surviving the battle and subsequent sinking of that ship. |
