Lieutenant Sandford, as Torpedo Officer, was stationed in the Fore Conning Tower until the explosion - the hatch was open, he told the others in explaining his escape. His next sea service was as Lieutenant-Commander (T) of HMS Furious, on commissioning in 1917. After serving as Captain of HMS Suffolk in 1938/39, he was placed on the retired List as Rear-Admiral in 1941, but returned, to serve as Captain, in command of HMS Iron Duke 1942/43.
