Three old scholars of New Groombridge St. Thomas' School took part in the great sea fight. Fortunately two are safe, as their ships escaped injury; but we regret to say that Mr. Francis Wm. Rye lost his life on board H.M.S. Black Prince, which went down with all hands. Frank, as he was familiarly called, was a telegraphist in the wireless department of H.M.S. Black Prince. Previous to joining the Navy he was a telegraph boy at the local Post Office. He was educated at the St. Thomas' School under Mr. O. Russell, and was also a member of the St. Thomas' Church Choir. He was a very promising lad, quiet and conscientious in all he did, and most attentive to his duties. He gained a special attendance award when he left school. He was 17 years of age last December, and being a popular lad, much sympathy is felt and expressed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rye, of Providence Cottages, in their bereavement, who received official news on Wednesday morning.
