Shipwright 2nd Class Albert Rattenbury

An early photo of my Great Uncle, Albert Edwin Rattenbury who served on HMS Galatea during the Battle of Jutland. It seems like two Lyme Regis men served onboard as I see Francis William Newbery was also originally from the town. In the photo of Galatea's Shipwrights department as shown on Francis Newberys page, Albert Rattenbury is the Petty Officer with pipe, back row, third in from the right.

ALBERT EDWIN RATTENBURY

Chief Petty Officer Shipwright 1st Class, HMS Galatea, Royal Navy

Service No. 344820

b. 14 Apr 1882 - Lyme Regis

d. 1959 - Gateshead

Albert Rattenbury joined the Royal Navy on 6 Jan 1902 at Portsmouth, signing on initially for 12 years. He remained in service as war approached serving at HMS Fisguard (Engineering School) in Portsmouth when war was declared. He joined the newly built HMS Galatea on the 19 Nov 1914, serving on her throughout the war. He left the ship 20 Feb 1920. He was discharged on the 8 Jan 1922 and lived at 37 Coombe Street Lyme Regis, Dorset but moved to Gateshead upon his marriage to the widowed Molly Bianchi. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal as well as the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

I hope this is of interest to you. I myself am ex-Royal Navy and have researched the other stories of men from Lyme Regis who fought, and some who died at at Jutland.
