H.C Oliver was a navigation instructor on HMS Barham. He was born in China and as a child was at the British Legation during the Boxer uprising. At Jutland his sleeping quarters were destroyed by shell fire. For many years, he had a large chunk of shrapnel from the engagement on his desk. After the war, he became a Maths teacher at a school in London. During WW2 he was a member of the Finchley home guard and was given the nickname of 'The Admiral' due to his time in the navy.
