Queen Mary - Crest

HMS Queen Mary was the last battlecruiser built before World War I and only member of her class. She was in the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron and was commanded by Cecil Irby Prowse. She was hit twice by the German battlecruiser DERFFLINGER during the early part of the battle and her magazines exploded shortly afterwards, sinking the ship. Of the crew of 1,289 there were only 20 survivors.
Although it is now confirmed that there were 20 survivors initial reports were somewhat contradictory.

  • HMS PETARD picked up PO Ernest Francis, according to his report.
  • One despatch stated that "Eighteen of her officers and men were subsequently picked up by LAUREL.
  • A signal stated "It is understood that four Midshipmen and 13 men were picked up by LAUREL".
  • Midshipman Dearden and AB Sherwood were picked up by the Germans and became prisoners of war.
  • Midshipman Durrant died of wounds on 6th June.
  • It is unclear whether Stoker Edwards was picked up by LAUREL or by a German U-Boat (see his story).
  • Records would indicate that there were only 2 POWs.
