There were 12 survivors of HMS Hampshire when she was sunk on 5th June 1916, after striking a mine off the Mainland of Orkney at about 7.40 pm, on passage to Russia with Lord Kitchener and his staff.

The survivors came ashore on three Carley floats. All passengers were lost.
