ARTHUR JAMES COWNDEN WIRELESS TELEGRAPHIST COWNDEN. At the early age of 17 1/2 years, Wireless Telegraphist Arthur Cownden, whose mother resides at 64. Carlyle-road, South Ealing, lost his life in the recent naval action. Young Cownden joined the Navy two years ago. His parents formerly resided in Darwin-road, and at that time he attended St. Mary's School. Later he was enrolled as a scholar of Little Ealing s`chool; and on concluding his studies he was employed by Mr. Stone of Chiswick. The deceased sailor was attached to H.M.S. Shark, and in a letter to Mrs. Cownden the Admiralty state that as that vessel has been sunk and her son's name does not occur in the list of the survivors he must be considered to have lost his life. A witness of the fight at Heligoland Bight, Cownden was at that time attached to the Laertes, the vessel which took such a prominent part in that engagement. Only twelve weeks he was home on leave. His father, Private F. Cownden, is serving in France with the A.S.C. Mrs. Cownden wishes, through the GAZETTE, to tender her sincere thanks to many kind friends for their expressions of sympathy in her bereavement. |
