HENRY GEORGE BROOKE WAS NOT 'KILLED IN ACTION' A man who was reported "killed in action" in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 will celebrate his golden wedding in New Plymouth tonight. He is Mr H.G. Brooke, of 7 Wallace Place, who joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 years 10 months and served for 17 years. Today Mr Brooke recalled how he was reported "killed." His ship, the Tipperary, was sunk at night. Of the total complement of 285, only one officer and 12 men survived. They were rescued the next morning by a passing cruiser. Meanwhile, it had been reported that all on board the Tipperary were dead. |
